Cymbidium banaense

January 16, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

Cymbidium banaense

An extraordinarily beautiful orchid flower from Cymbidium banaense, an eburneum-like Cymbidium, found in southern Vietnam and named for the area (Bana) near where it grows.  This orchid was honored by having its portrait displayed at the juried Filoli Art Exhibition in January 2019. The Cymbidium … [Read more...] about Cymbidium banaense

A small warm growing area using fluorescent lights: four key features for great growing results

January 16, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

Top shelf of orchid growing area

Winter in our house is a time of reckoning for Phalaenopsis roots.  For several years, I struggled with a "boom" and "bust" cycle in my growing of Phals -- expansive root growth, leaves, and flowering, followed by a winter decline and a cycle of repotting to clean up decaying roots. I'm writing … [Read more...] about A small warm growing area using fluorescent lights: four key features for great growing results

Dockrillia striolata x Dendrobium Ida Mary

January 16, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

Dendrobium Ida Mary x Dockrillia Ida Mary

This unregistered hybrid (to my knowledge) is a vigorous combination of three Australian Dockrillia (Dendrobium) species: 50% Dockrillia striolata, 25% Dockrillia mortii, and 25% Dockrillia schoeninum. With our Dockrillia (Dendrobium) striolata, it grows outdoors year-round in the sheltered … [Read more...] about Dockrillia striolata x Dendrobium Ida Mary

Paphiopedilum Leeanum

January 15, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

Paphiopedium Leeanum

Paphiopedilum Leeanum is the primary hybrid of Paphiopedilum insigne and Paphiopedilum spicerianum.  As you can see from the flowers, Paphiopedilum insigne is much more dominant as a parent.  The foliage is also much thicker and broader than any Paphiopedilum spicerianum that I've seen or grown (see … [Read more...] about Paphiopedilum Leeanum

Cymbidium Cherry Blossom ‘Profusion’

January 15, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

Cymbidium Cherry Blossom 'Profusion'

One of our favorite miniature Cymbidium, Cymbidium Cherry Blossom is a primary hybrid of Cymbidium floribundum and Cymbidium erythrostylum.  The qualities of both parents are visible in the flowers, and blend remarkably well.  Quite floriferous, in its second year growing from a small division in a … [Read more...] about Cymbidium Cherry Blossom ‘Profusion’

Dendrobium aberrans

January 15, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

Dendrobium aberrans

Dendrobium aberanns is a wonderful miniature species from Papua New Guinea.  Its flowers are relatively long lasting, and can be profuse with a larger plant.  It has been used as a parent in many commonly available hybrids, including one of our favorites, the durable and ever-flowering Dendrobium … [Read more...] about Dendrobium aberrans

Cymbidium Canterbury ‘Coburg’

January 15, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

Cymbdium Canterbury Coburg

One of our most appreciated Cymbidium, both for its hardiness, and late summer flowering.  Its tall gradated pink flower spikes dominate the growing area in July, when most of our outdoor orchids are not flowering.  The only downside to the late summer flowering is that the flower spikes can be … [Read more...] about Cymbidium Canterbury ‘Coburg’

Dendrobium Nagasaki

January 15, 2018 By A'na Sa'tara

Dendrobium Nagasaki 'Cherry Blossom''

The cross of Dendrobium moniliform and Dendrobium Sagimusume.  A temperature tolerant and hardy orchid that grows very well outside in the shade house.  I have two cultivars and 'Cherry Blossom' is more cold tolerant than 'S&W'.     Interested in more unique and … [Read more...] about Dendrobium Nagasaki
